Benalmádena

Benalmádena lies some 19 km west of Malaga airport and the capital and sits between the towns of Fuengirola and Torremolinos with a population of around 45.000 inhabitants.

The municipality is split into three areas, the old village known and Benalmadena Pueblo, the coastal part of Benalmadena Costa and the modern town known as Arroyo de la Miel.

Benalmádena Pueblo

The old village has still maintained some of its old-world charm despite the large numbers of visitors and new constructions that have grown up near the Village. Benalmadena Pueblo has a unique architectural style which is a blend of Moorish, Spanish and modern designs.

Arroyo de la Miel

The busy commercial town center separating the village on the hill from the seafront. Arroyo has grown rapidly, due greatly to the excellent train service running between Fuengirola and Malaga, as well as good road connection.

Benalmádena Costa

The coastal part is where you can find a wide-ranging variety of activities and nightlife for all the family. The fantastic award-winning Benalmadena Puerto Marina is one of the most amazing ports and residential developments in the world. The marina attracts many visitors day and night offering a large number of shops, bars, restaurants and other facilities that make it an ideal location for all the family.

El Parque de la Paloma is a gorgeous and extensive park in the center of Benalmadena Costa. There is a stunning array of both local and exotic plants, and there are many animals such as hens, rabbits and exotic birds walking freely around the park. Next to La Paloma Park you will find Selwo Marina, where you can view dolphins, sea lions, crocodiles, exotic birds and snakes.

Shopping

Along the Avenida de la Constitución and nearby streets, right in the centre of Arroyo de la Miel, you can find a multitude of shops and small businesses that offer all the options for those who wish to go shopping, whatever you are looking for.

In the coastal area around Avenida Antonio Machado and the Paseo Marítimo, right by the sea, there is also a large concentration of shops and the typical summer stalls selling accessories such as belts, scarves, necklaces, T-shirts, etc.

Puerto Marina Shopping is a unique and different shopping center, open to leisure, restaurants and everyday shopping.

Benalmádena Pueblo is undoubtedly the best option to buy a typical product of the area.

Gastronomy

As befitting a coastal town in southern Spain, Benalmádena has a wide selection of restaurants, including many specializing in the healthy, Mediterranean cuisine, particularly the delicious region paella. The area around the marina, has a good range of fresh fish restaurants, and you’ll also find every other type of food, from Argentinian steaks to Middle East, Indian, French and Italian.

Festivals

Benalmadena is known for its full calendar of all-year-round festivities and cultural celebrations, from organized art and sporting events to traditional and religious processions – all of which give life and vitality to this cosmopolitan town.

San Juan Fair in Arroyo de la Miel, from June 24 to 29. These are the festivals in honor of the patron saint, with fun, music, dance, music and popular events that attract large numbers of locals and foreigners. The day fair takes place in the Plaza de la Mezquita and the night fair takes place at the fairgrounds.

Fiestas del Carmen, July 16. This festival honoring the patron saint of fishermen is held in all municipalities of the Costa del Sol. The sailors carry the Virgin on a ship into the sea, accompanied by dozens of boats, to bless the waters and at night there are fireworks.

Mid-August sees festival of the ‘Virgen de la Cruz’ (The Virgin of the Cross). This annual festival of great traditional and cultural importance, is celebrated with a procession is through the streets of the Pueblo.
