Torremolinos

Torremolinos is a popular holiday resort situated 12 kilometres from Malaga and 5 km from Malaga airport-Costa del Sol.

Though it appears to have been founded in 1489, Torremolinos is a typical product of the tourist boom of the 1960″s, which turned this small fishing village into a large, densely-populated town devoted entirely to sun and sand tourism, boasting large beaches and all manner of related facilities; it is also home to a Congress Centre which has played host to important international conventions on numerous occasions.

Despite the huge urban development, Torremolinos has preserved the Mediterranean atmosphere in the streets of its most traditional neighbourhoods of El Calvario, El Bajondillo and La Carihuela; the fishermen’s districts where you should definitely sample the typical fried fish (pescaito frito) whose denomination of origin was created in La Carihuela in 1960.

The Plaza de la Costa del Sol and Calle San Miguel are two places you have to see if you want to get to know Torremolinos. The square at the heart of the town is a cultural hotspot and is fully pedestrianised – you can see numerous exhibitions and performances there at street level. Calle San Miguel is an immense shop window where you can find all the souvenirs of Torremolinos you will want to take back with you.

The Parque de la Batería is Torremolinos’s great green space. Opened in 2007 and extending over 74,000 square metres, it is an important part of the town thanks to its densely wooded area, its views of the coastline and a spectacular lake, on which boating is permitted. The park is criss-crossed by paths, trails and cycle paths.

Among its most popular attractions is the leading water park on the Costa del Sol: Aqualand is one of the top tourist attractions especially for families and teens on account of its numerous rides that are constantly being renewed and upgraded. Adjacent to it is the Cocodrilos Park, where you see no fewer than 260 of these magnificent reptiles.

Gastronomy

One of Torremolinos’s main attractions is its cuisine, with the open-fire sardine skewers “espeto de sardinas” and the tasty “pescaíto frito” fried being its main specialties. The restaurants, bars and beach bars (“chiringuitos”) in La Carihuela and El Bajondillo are authentic culinary temples. You’ll find coquinas, paella, seafood soup (sopa de mariscos), salted fish (pescado a la sal), and other authentic Mediterranean dishes on their menus.

Shopping

Torremolinos has a good selection of shops and shopping facilities, with everything from clothing to authentic Spanish leather products. The Calle San Miguel is pedestrianised and has an abundance of shops, as well as the main Plaza de Andalucia, which also has a wide variety of shops. 

There are two street markets in Torremolinos. On Thursdays there is a general market ‘mercadillo’ selling everything from fruit and veg, plants, to clothes and household appliances.  On Sundays there is a ‘rastro’  selling second hand goods, antiques, collectors items and handicrafts. Both are located in the feria ground, next to the bullring and San Miguel at the end of Avenida de Real on the mountain side of the N-340a coast road.

Festivals

Like all the towns in Andalucia Torremolinos celebrates numerous traditional festivals. Here are some of the more important:

In February the Carnival in Torremolinos is lived with intensity of. Carnival in Torremolinos is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar, brightening up the town after the long Winter.

The Feria del Carmen, from 14th until July the 16th is celebrated in Torremolinos in the fishermen´s district of La Carihuela with the traditional sea procession

The San Miguel Fair, around September 29 until October 2, takes place during the day downtown and at night at the fairgrounds with music, dance, food and fun until dawn. A few days before these festivities is celebrated the popular pilgrimage of San Miguel, where numerous adorned carts drawn by oxen peregrinate to the chapel in Los Pinares de los Manantiales, in a colorful and joyful atmosphere.
